What The Arts Mean to Indianapolis... And You

"What The Arts Mean" is an advocacy campaign created by the Arts Council of Indianapolis to reinforce the value of the arts to Indianapolis. Its primary goals are to provide increased visibility for messages about the strength of the arts, to increase awareness of the value and impact of the arts, and to assist those interested in supporting the arts in sharing arts facts and figures with elected officials and other community leaders. This campaign is supported by private funding.

The campaign is based around three core messages:

  • The arts mean... A Safer City
  • The arts mean... A Stronger Economy
  • The arts mean... A Vibrant Community

Each message was developed to demonstrate better how the arts address critical issues confronting Indianapolis, and each is supported throughout the campaign by statistics and examples to underscore further the value of the arts to our community.

Speaking of community - we need your help getting these messages out! To make that easier, we've created an Advocacy Toolkit that's full of talking points, statistics, brochures, and videos you can share with the campaign's key audiences.

Campaign Focus

The campaign is meant to communicate with the following audiences:

  • City and state government officials
  • Civic leaders
  • Arts organizations and professionals
  • Residents and visitors
Campaign Elements

The campaign uses cost-effective tactical elements to communicate the messages, including:

  • Postcards
  • Posters
  • Public Service Announcements
  • E-communications

The campaign uses compelling black and white photography and vignettes featuring individuals and their stories to bring faces to the arts, and to create a relationship between recipients, readers, viewers, and people who benefit from the arts. Each element urges all to get involved with the arts, and to visit whattheartsmean.org to learn more about their value to the community.

The first in the postcard and poster series was distributed in early March 2009; new versions are planned for release throughout the summer and early fall of 2009. The PSA's were delivered to TV stations in April 2009, and will also be distributed via email.

We have also created communication tools including talking points, statistics, brochures, videos and more that arts organizations and advocates of all types may share with key decision makers and city leaders. (We'll even help you contact state and local elected officials.)

Many of these tools may be immediately downloaded from this site, and we're happy to provide printed pieces for your use, too. Just let us know how many you want, and when! ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
